The Root of Bitterness
Hebrews 12:15, “Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any ROOT OF BITTERNESS springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.”
There is a primary need among churches, families, and individuals to uproot bitterness from their lives. This, “root of bitterness” as it is called in Hebrews 12:15, springs up in the soil of many hearts and causes great trouble to all who are affected by it. Many Christians who were once Holy Spirit-led believers have responded in an unscriptural way to unfortunate situations and have become bitter. Difficult circumstances, rather than pointing them to the all-sufficient grace of God, have driven them from God to a place of no grace at all, a place of bitterness.
The root of bitterness can produce harmful fruit. Though the root of bitterness is not easily noticed, the fruit of bitterness is very noticeable. This fruit can damage and destroy family relationships, as well as bring financial ruin. This bitter root can grow into the fruit of both physical and emotional illness. The sight of the consequences of bitterness is an unpleasant one to behold. Often a bitter root will result in generational repercussions that will not be seen until years later. Perhaps the worst fruit of a bitter root is a stunted personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Bitterness hinders the Spirit-filled life that God intends for each of His children to enjoy. The fruit of the Spirit cannot evidence itself in the life of someone who has a bitter root. By taking a look at the fruit in our lives, we are forced to consider what type of root system we have. Are some of the negative fruits mentioned here a reality in your life? Perhaps the root of bitterness is a logical explanation for the fruit of bitterness you see. …. continued tomorrow
